I’ve been experimenting with paper doilies of late. This piece has layers of light yellow thread pulling ever so slightly on the doily, which raises the edges and creates both a shadow behind the paper of the lace impressions, as well as a shadow of layers beneath the cotton thread. This idea came about when I was toting with ideas for the Red Brick Gallery in Ballarats’ ‘small works’ prize. My plan is to create 4 of these: a yellow, a pink, a green and a blue; and pin them to the wall with dress makers pins. There’s something medatative and comforting in hand sewing for me. The pleasure of creating these pieces, as well ad their simple aesthetic is futile in my arts practice currently, as I feel I’ve lost my way a little.
